I have been building model railway trackwork and signals professionally for over 25 years.
I have also designed various etched parts for model railways, which have been produced in either brass or nickel silver. Now I am beginning to embrace the 3D printed world as well, mainly for signalling parts but also some track parts hopefully. More news on this in due course.
As can be seen from the above I also build Colour light signals to order in both 4mm and 7mm scales (the one pictured above is 7mm scale). Banner Repeaters and Route Indicators are currently under consideration.
PRICES - recently, I have been giving the matter some consideration. Historically the larger scales have been very much more expensive than the smaller ones.
Now for certain things this can hold true (e.g. a highly detailed locomotive or coach) but for others, I think it is not, it all depends on the amount of work required. Then there is the snobbery angle. "If it is more expensive it must be better".
Trackwork, yes the raw materials may cost more but like for like they do not take any longer to build, true if something has more detail then it involves more work and will be more expensive. The same holds true for Signals. The smaller scales suffer because to achieve the same thing takes more time, which is actually
a lot more expensive than the parts. So a lot of my prices for 7mm scale items will be going down, whilst the smaller ones will be going up. I have also revamped the 4mm scale prices so some will be up whilst others down. This is all to reflect the actual cost of the item concerned, which is primarily the cost of making the thing.
For example a standard 7mm scale signal with working light and servo will now cost from £83.00 (55.00 without light or servo) in comparison for the same signal in 4mm now £69.60 (£41.60 no light or servo), the difference being the additional cost of "P&P" plus parts, the time it takes and hence the cost of putting it toether is much the same.
A bracket signal having 2 posts and two arms with a similar specification will now cost £195 (£146.00 with no servos or lights) in 7mm scale and £201.00 in 4mm scale (£145.00 no lights or servos) simply because although the parts may be slightly more expensive in 7mm scale it is easier to build and takes less time.
I have now found the time to design a few things in 3D, the first item that will appear is a 7mm scale model of a Midland Railway square lamp casing. These will be available soon and will be followed by other items in due course.
